Canada Day is coming up this weekend, and locals are likely already excited about the celebrations taking place on the beach in Grand Bend. Nan Brooks and her husband Severio Rinaldi have led the Grand Bend Canada Day Celebrations Committee for four years, and she says that she always looks forward to the occasion.
For over 20 years, the weekend has been an attraction for many, starting at 12:30 on Saturday with live entertainment, face painting and more. The fireworks start with the national anthem at 10pm. New this year, they have an ASL interpreter present for the musical acts to make sure that everyone can enjoy the show. The highlight of the day is always the fireworks display, says Brooks
At 10pm, after the national anthem is sang, hundreds of fireworks are set off from the pier. In the event that it’s raining or there’s too much wind, the fireworks will be rescheduled for the following evening. The fireworks used by the celebrations are also environmentally friendly.
If you enjoy the festivities, make sure that you donate to support next year. Brooks says that every year they spend around $60,000 to make the day one for the books.
myFM’s Chris Soares is back again this year as your host for the Canada Day Bash at the Beach, and you can donate in advance of the event at Sobeys, Mike and Terri’s No Frills, or Impressions, or the day of the event by cash, or tip-tap. The event has also received generous sponsorship from 25 businsesses and organizations in the community.
