The Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU) president is commending college faculty members for their upcoming salary increase of 6.5 percent over a span of three years.
In a released statement, J-P Hornick highlights the dedication of these faculty members to rectify a legislative imbalance demonstrated throughout the negotiation phase.
This group constitutes the most recent segment of the public sector workforce to observe an escalation in their earnings.
The cause is an Ontario court’s invalidation of a provincial wage restraint legislation known as Bill 124.
The previously implemented provincial wage restraint had imposed a cap of one percent annual salary increases for broader public sector employees over a three-year period.
While the government filed an appeal to the court’s pronouncement last year that the law was unconstitutional, numerous employees have been granted supplementary wages.
This development has arisen owing to contractual “re-opener” clauses that were activated when the legislation was abolished.
