Middlesex Centre Fire Services says a family’s safe escape from a devastating house fire was possible due to working smoke alarms.
On Monday, three fire stations responded to a house fire in Poplar Hill where thankfully, everyone exited the house unharmed, although the damage is estimated at $1 million.
The fire’s cause is currently under investigation.
Local firefighters had visited the home earlier in October as part of their door-to-door smoke alarm testing program, ensuring the alarms were operational and providing the family with the crucial warning needed to evacuate.
Last year, Ontario had 133 lives lost due to fatal fires, the highest number in over two decades, with many incidents involving non-functional smoke alarms.
It is important to remember to check your smoke alarms frequently and test to make sure they work.
