For those looking to quit smoking, this is the week to do it. Established in 1977 by the Canadian Council for Tobacco Control, National Non-Smoking Week takes place the third week of January each year. Dr. Alex Summers, Medical Officer of Health at the Middlesex-London Health Unit says there are some startling statistics about smoking in Canada.
Dr. Summers says quitting smoke is not as easy as some may think.
In Canada, about 10% of people smoke, according to Health Canada in 2022. Even though fewer people are smoking, 37,000 Canadians still pass away each year because of illnesses caused by tobacco. In 2020, the habit of using tobacco cost the Canadian economy $11.2 billion. The country’s plan, mentioned in Canada’s Tobacco Strategy, is to decrease this percentage to under 5% by the year 2035.
