A significant change to the dog tag program was discussed and approved at the most recent Adelaide Metcalfe Township meeting in February. The shift moves from a three-year tagging cycle to a permanent tag system. Originally introduced in 2021, the previous system required tags to be renewed every three years, incurring costs and administrative effort. With the closure of the Glencoe Animal Shelter in 2023 and the transition to the London Middlesex Humane Society’s services, which doesn’t offer door-to-door tagging, the value of the three-year cycle diminished.
The township spends approximately $500 every three years on new tags, and moving to a permanent tagging system is expected to eliminate these costs. The Humane Society contract costs about $17,000 annually, partially offset by $12,000 from dog owners. Eliminating the dog licensing program would require the township to cover the full cost, affecting the tax base.
