A new era is set to launch for the Strathroy Rockets of the GOJHL.
The league announced Friday morning the team has been sold to former NHL-er Cory Conacher.
He will be the sole owner with Andrew Ferlatte taking on the role of GM.
Conacher, who skated in close to 200 NHL games noted, “ I’m super excited to take on this chapter with a junior team and make a positive impact on the community.”
The Burlington native spent time with Tampa Bay, Ottawa, Buffalo and the Islanders over his career. He played college hockey with Canisius Golden Griffins where he set a dozen records.
He played in 66 games last season with the AHL Chicago Wolves, netting 8 goals and 11 assists.
Ferlatte added, “Both Cory and I are honoured to be welcomed into a league with such a rich history like the GOJHL and to be able to build on an already storied franchise like the Strathroy Rockets is a tremendous opportunity, we are grateful to join the Strathroy community with a goal to win a Sutherland Cup.”
GOJHL interim Commissioner Tim Simmons paid tribute to Kent Coleman, the team’s former president and director of hockey operations, “for his many years of hard work and dedication to the Rockets and the GOJHL. We are thrilled to add a new owner with Cory’s resume and experience to the GOJHL and wish him all the best in this new chapter of his hockey career.”
