Devastation Sunday evening as a fire destroyed three large camping trailers at Shady Pines Campground near Ailsa Craig as fire crews from North Middlesex were sent there around 11pm. Shortly before the fire trucks arrived, nearby residents were alerted by loud noises and the sight of flames. Theresa Bray who submitted some photos to local media said “We heard a big boom just after 11:00, and it shook our trailer.” Firefighters quickly took control, focusing first on ensuring no one was trapped inside the trailers.
Among those watching the scene was North Middlesex Mayor Brian Ropp. On Monday morning, Ropp reflected on the efforts of volunteers who alerted residents of the danger. At its peak, 25 firefighters from two North Middlesex stations were on the scene, with additional engines from Lucan and Ilderton. Early estimates put the damage at $100,000. The cause of the fire is still under investigation according to the Fire Department.
