On Friday morning, Strathroy-Caradoc held a flag-raising ceremony at the municipal office to honor the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. On hand in addition to residents along with town staff and councillors were Mayor Colin Grantham, Chief Joe Miskokomon of the Chippewa of the Thames First Nation, and Chief Todd Cornelius from the Oneida Nation of the Thames. Mayor Grantham told myFM, that recognizing September 30th is very important.
Chief Joe Miskokomon said simply this day is very important to so many.
He added the title of the day itself says it all.
Chief Todd Cornelius told myFM he was very pleased to be invited to an event signifying an opportunity to build bridges of communication.
Mayor Grantham added the flag raising provided an opportunity for reflection on the enduring impacts of the residential school system in Canada, honoring the survivors, their families, and their communities.
