The Ontario government has announced a proposal to allocate over $77 million to assist municipalities in managing the rising costs of police services provided by the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP). This initiative aims to support small and rural communities grappling with budget pressures stemming from the collective bargaining agreement reached between the province and the Ontario Provincial Police Association (OPPA) in July 2024.
The proposed relief package targets the financial impacts of OPP salary increases in 2025 and includes the following measures:
A 3.75% reduction on 2023 total reconciled policing costs
A 44% reduction on 2023 reconciled overtime costs
A 10% reduction on 2025 policing cost invoices
In addition to these measures, the government will maintain its annual $125 million Court Security & Prisoner Transportation Transfer Payment Program for the 2025 calendar year.
The province has also committed to exploring updates to the OPP billing model to ensure it better aligns with the needs of communities across Ontario.news1 Moved File from Markets\Strathroy\holding to Markets\Strathroy\Daily Stories @ 11/29/24 12:23 PM
