The Peterborough County Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police is expanding its use of new technology, introducing body-worn cameras for front-line officers.
Following the successful deployment of in-car cameras equipped with Automated Licence Plate Recognition systems, the latest initiative aims to enhance transparency, accountability, and evidence collection while improving public and officer safety.
The BWCs, worn on the front of an officer’s vest, are designed to be clearly visible during interactions with the public. A ring of flashing green lights indicates standby mode, while flashing red lights signal active recording.
Officers are currently undergoing training on the devices, with deployment beginning immediately upon completion. The full rollout across Peterborough County OPP is expected by early spring.
The OPP says the introduction of body-worn cameras is part of its ongoing commitment to modern policing practices and community trust.
