Mitchell Pellarin, a medical student at Western University’s Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, is spending time in Strathroy as part of Discovery Week, a program that gives future doctors a chance to learn in small communities.
Pellarin explained the week is for the first year med students to learn about small communities.
Pellarin was matched with Strathroy and has spent time at Strathroy Middlesex General Hospital learning the different departments, with a short trip to Mount Brydges for family medicine.
Every day includes a Lunch and Learn session, where local doctors speak about their careers and offer advice. Pellarin said the talks and hands-on experience have helped him see new options for his future.
But Discovery Week has also taught him about life outside of the hospital.
While he hasn’t chosen his exact career path yet, family medicine is something he’s strongly considering.
Pellarin shared advice for other students who want to go into medicine.
Through Discovery Week, Pellarin and other students get a firsthand look at what community healthcare is really about, both inside and outside the hospital.
