For the next year, Strathroy-Caradoc Police Chief Mark Campbell will be President of the Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police. Campbell says he is both proud and humbled to take on the role.
The association, which has existed for 74 years, gives police leaders across Ontario a platform to share ideas, solve problems together, and speak up about issues affecting policing and public safety.
Campbell says the new position gives him a chance to represent not only his fellow police leaders but also to bring forward the unique experiences of smaller communities like Strathroy-Caradoc.
Campbell’s path to this role began several years ago. He first served as a zone representative, then moved into the position of West Region Director, covering an area from Aylmer to Windsor.
From there, he joined the association’s executive board, later becoming a vice president. Last year, he served as first vice president, which led directly to becoming president.
The position is a one-year term, and Campbell has several priorities in mind for the months ahead. Campbell also noted that current global events and economic pressures are having a real impact on safety at the community level, and that will also be part of his focus.
While the role will involve more travel and meetings, especially in Toronto, Campbell says he is grateful to have strong support back home. Deputy Chief Brent Cushman and other members of the local service will help ensure the community remains in good hands while Campbell carries out his new responsibilities.
One personal issue Campbell hopes to bring more attention to is the well-being of police officers. He says the physical, mental, and emotional health of members is key to building strong police services and safe communities.
