Two hikers who got lost on a trail in North Middlesex were found safe thanks to the help of a location app.
On September 1st, just before 4 p.m., Middlesex County OPP were called to the trail at 101 Elm Tree Drive after two hikers reported they had lost their way. Using the free app What3Words, police were able to pinpoint the hikers’ location and guide them back to their vehicle. No injuries were reported.
The What3Words app divides the world into small squares, each given a unique three-word address. It allows people to share their exact location, even without Wi-Fi, making it a valuable tool for emergency situations.
Police are reminding hikers to always prepare before heading out on local trails. This includes checking the weather, knowing the length and difficulty of the hike, carrying water, snacks, and navigation tools, and ensuring cell phones are fully charged. Hikers are also encouraged to tell someone where they are going and how long they expect to be gone.
Middlesex County OPP say there are many beautiful trails across the region, but it is important for everyone to know their limits and stay safe. Anyone needing help can call OPP anywhere in Ontario at 1-888-310-1122.
