The Canadian Mental Health Association Thames Valley including Strathroy is joining communities across Canada today in recognizing World Suicide Prevention Day, part of its activities for Suicide Prevention Month.
Every year, about 4,500 Canadians die by suicide – an average of 12 people each day. CMHA says these deaths are preventable and that awareness is a vital first step toward saving lives.
To support people in crisis, Canada’s national suicide crisis helpline, 9-8-8, offers free and confidential support by call or text, 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year.
“This World Suicide Prevention Day, we’re encouraging everyone to take a moment to learn about 9-8-8 and share it widely. You never know who might need it,” the association said in a statement.
By recognizing and remembering 9-8-8, CMHA says communities become stronger and more responsive to those in crisis.
If you or someone you know is struggling or thinking about suicide, you can call or text 9-8-8 anytime to reach the 9-8-8 Suicide Crisis Helpline for free, confidential support. More information on local mental health programs and services is available through CMHA’s website.
