It might be the season of giving, but unfortunately, there are still people out there looking to take instead. OPP Constable Andrew Gamble says Christmas packages are flying off delivery trucks and landing on front doorsteps and thieves are well aware of that.
While you would hope no one would ever steal a gift from your front step, police say it happens far more often than people realize. Part of the reason is because porch theft can be an easy crime of opportunity.
Thankfully, there are steps you can take to reduce the risk.
Gamble also recommends requesting a signature upon delivery or having packages sent to your workplace when possible. Installing video cameras and posting signage indicating surveillance is in effect can also act as a deterrent.
If a package is stolen from your home, police say you should report the incident to both your local police service and the shipping company as soon as possible.
