Lambton County’s Medical Officer of Health, and the Middlesex London Health Unit have both issued a Cold Weather Alert for the region as temperatures are expected to drop significantly overnight.
According to Environment Canada, overnight temperatures are forecast to reach minus 15 degrees Celsius, which meets the threshold for a Cold Weather Alert. The alert is expected to remain in effect until Thursday in Lambton County and until the end of Wednesday in Middlesex.
Cold Weather Alerts are issued when temperatures fall to minus 15 degrees Celsius or lower, when a wind chill warning is in place, or when extreme weather such as a blizzard or ice storm is expected.
Lambton Public Health is advising local agencies that provide shelter and support to people experiencing homelessness to prepare for increased demand during the alert.
Residents are being reminded to take precautions when heading outdoors. Lambton Public Health recommends dressing in layers, covering exposed areas such as the head, neck, and face, and limiting time spent outside whenever possible.
Extended exposure to cold temperatures can be dangerous and, in some cases, life-threatening. Hypothermia occurs when the body temperature drops below the normal range. Symptoms may include pale skin, confusion, extreme shivering, fatigue, and hallucinations.
More information about cold weather safety, including how to prevent hypothermia and frostbite, is available on the Lambton Public Health website.
Anyone experiencing homelessness, or who knows someone in need of shelter, is encouraged to contact Lambton County Social Services at 519-344-2062 during regular business hours. After hours, assistance is available through Good Shepherd’s Lodge at 519-344-1679.
