The Municipality of Southwest Middlesex has announced new provincial funding to enhance firefighter health and safety in the community. The Southwest Middlesex Fire Department will receive $36,233.56 to strengthen cancer prevention measures for frontline crews. The funding will be used to purchase additional turnout gear, protective hoods, and specialized cleaning supplies aimed at reducing firefighters’ exposure to harmful contaminants encountered during emergency responses.
Firefighters will now be able to rotate gear more efficiently, ensuring clean clothing is available while used items undergo professional cleaning. The investment will also support improved on-scene and post-incident decontamination practices, further protecting those who serve the community.
“Our firefighters show incredible dedication to protecting Southwest Middlesex,” said Mayor Allan Mayhew. “This funding is about protecting them in return. It ensures they have the equipment and resources needed to stay healthy and safe while serving our residents.”
MPP Steve Pinsonneault highlighted the Province’s commitment to frontline emergency responders. “Firefighters are pillars of our communities. Our government is proud to invest in initiatives that help protect their health and well-being. This funding will make a real difference for the firefighters of Southwest Middlesex.”
Fire Chief Gary Johnston noted the significance of the funding for the department. “Cancer prevention is a growing priority in the fire service. This investment strengthens our ability to protect our team and support long, healthy careers in service to our community.”
