The first-ever Polar Plunge hosted by the Strathroy-Caradoc Police Service went off with a huge splash last Thursday, bringing the community together for a fun and chilly fundraiser in support of Special Olympics. The event took place at the Gemini Sportsplex, where local emergency services, including police, OPP and first responders, took the plunge into icy water.
Constable Katherine Lockwood says she was thrilled with the turnout and support from the community.
She says the event raised more than $7,000. A big highlight of the day was the strong turnout from local students and youth.
There was also some friendly competition between police and fire crews when it came to fundraising.
The event also featured plenty of activities for those who stayed dry. Strathroy Ice House was on site selling bags of ice for people to toss into the plunge, while others supported the cause by choosing to “Duck Out” with small donations.
After a strong first year, organizers say plans are already in the works to bring the Polar Plunge back next year, with hopes of making it even bigger.
