A girls’ hockey club, with about 70 members from a large area including Strathroy-Caradoc, has been left out in the COLD when it comes to ice time at the Komoka Wellness Centre. The popular non-profit rec team, known as the Ice Puffins, hasn’t been able to secure a reasonable time slot during the busy fall and winter season.
myFM spoke with the Club’s President, Kevin McClelland.
Courtney Godfrey, Director of Community Services for Middlesex Centre says the municipality follows specific guidelines to accommodate its many users and girls hockey is important to them.
McClelland says the Arena hasn’t been very helpful.
Godfrey says a 10pm slot IS actually prime time ice.
McClelland says they feel like they’re being brushed off because they’re girls and just a rec team.
The Ice Puffins program was started by McClelland last summer as a way for young girls to try hockey without the large time and financial commitments that come with traditional leagues.
