OPP is warning residents about a scam that has recently been reported in neighbouring communities.
The “grandparent scam” involves a caller pretending to be a family member who is in trouble and needs money right away. They may claim the person has been involved in an emergency or criminal incident.
In some cases, scammers ask for five to eight-thousand dollars in cash. Victims are told to put the money in an envelope and leave it somewhere on their property for the scammer to pick up.
Police are reminding residents to stay calm and never give out personal or financial information over the phone.
If you get a suspicious call, hang up and contact your family directly and police.
OPP is also encouraging residents to talk with family and friends about common scams and how to avoid becoming a victim.
