There were some anticipated fireworks at a Strathroy-Caradoc Mayoral television debate Wednesday night but not until the cameras stopped rolling. About 150 voters turned out to the Strathroy Portuguese Canadian Club for a Rogers TV presentation featuring Mayoral candidates Colin Grantham and Brian Derbyshire and moderated by London resident and Strathroy Toastmasters President Ross Cunningham.
The candidates fielded 16 questions submitted over the last few weeks by members of the public, the event itself lasting about an hour and twenty minutes, and topics ranging from affordable housing, taxes, the Mount Brydges arena, governmental transparency, integrity of the office, infrastructure, and community growth. There were times that the candidates went back and forth with verbal punches and counter punches, but the real fireworks happened once the cameras were off.
Following the show signoff, the candidates were involved in a heated verbal exchange on stage with sharp comments, accusations and profanity lasting several minutes before personell from Rogers TV had to step in to let cooler heads prevail.
The re-airing of the event can be seen on the RogersTV You Tube channel in addition to the Rogers channel for cable subscribers.
