The Strathroy Rockets are preparing to host their first Indigenous Heritage Night, featuring special jerseys, cultural ceremonies and a fundraiser.
The event takes place during the team’s game tomorrow night, with puck drop set for 7:30 p.m. and doors opening at 5:30 p.m.
Rockets General Manager Andrew Ferlatte says the team is excited to host this special event.
You may recall back in the summer, the Rockets had a jersey design contest. The winning jersey will be featured as part of tomorrow’s game.
The custom jerseys will be raffled off to the highest bidders, with all proceeds going to a good cause, the IADC. Ferlatte says people will be able to bid online through a platform that will be announced on the team’s social media, or at the game.
He told myFM why now was the right time to host something like this.
The night will also include a drumming circle and a smudging ceremony. The team has also sent invitations to nearby First Nations communities, including Chippewas of the Thames First Nation, Oneida Nation of the Thames and Munsee-Delaware First Nation.
The Rockets hope the evening will give fans a chance to learn more about Indigenous culture while supporting a meaningful cause.
