The trial of a former Strathroy-area babysitter charged in the death of a 15-month-old boy has reached a significant milestone, with all evidence now presented after 49 days of testimony, legal arguments and multiple adjournments.
Meggin Van Hoof, 47, has pleaded not guilty to one count of manslaughter in connection with the death of Nathaniel McLellan.
The toddler was in Van Hoof’s care on the day he was rushed to hospital by his mother in 2015. Nathaniel died in October of that year after suffering blunt force trauma to the head.
Van Hoof was not charged until six years after the child’s death.
The Crown concluded its case on Friday, following which the defence confirmed it would not be calling any evidence. Van Hoof also will not be taking the stand to testify in her own defence.
Justice Michael Carnegie reminded the court that the responsibility rests with the Crown to prove the charge beyond a reasonable doubt.
With the evidence phase of the trial now complete, the case has been adjourned until October 28. The next appearance is expected to establish a date for closing submissions, which may not take place until February 2027.
Van Hoof remains presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
