As voters head to the polls for the municipal election, school board trustees are another important part of the ballot.
Josh Lamb, a trustee with the London District Catholic School Board (LDCSB), says trustees help guide the board, make decisions about education and give families a voice when concerns come up.
Trustees are responsible for hiring the director of education, who oversees superintendents and school administrators. They also vote on budgets, review policies and take part in committees that help shape decisions for the board.
Lamb says trustees can also help families who have concerns about issues such as school transportation, special education or bullying.
While day-to-day school operations are handled by school staff, trustees can bring concerns to the appropriate superintendent when needed.
He says voting for school board trustees matters even for people who do not have children or grandchildren in school.
For voters choosing between school board trustee candidates, Lamb recommends speaking with them directly before making a decision.
He suggests asking why they want the role, what goals they have for the board and what they believe are the biggest challenges facing local education.
Lamb says taking the time to learn about the candidates can help voters make an informed choice.
Municipal election day is today.
